eBay candidates should prepare to solve JavaScript problems, understand unfamiliar code, and explain how a shopping experience works across the browser and server. Candidates in 2026 have encountered vanilla JavaScript and Node.js exercises, alongside architecture discussions about moving from product listings to product details.

Give debugging and asynchronous programming substantial practice time. For full-stack roles, extend that preparation into Node.js request handling; for frontend architecture, work through a shopper's journey and the behavior of slow or failing services.

Interview process

eBay's official hiring guide describes conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and potential teammates. Engineering applicants may complete a coding assessment or technical screen. The page provides general hiring guidance rather than a fixed frontend schedule, so confirm the coding environment and whether your loop includes backend implementation.

The official policy allows AI for preparation but prohibits its use during interviews and assessments. Practice solving and explaining the work independently. Confirm documentation and IDE permissions separately with your recruiter.

Coding rounds

JavaScript and existing-code debugging

In April 2026, a frontend candidate said they had been told to expect an hour of debugging and refactoring a JavaScript/Node.js codebase, with attention to reliability, security, and maintainability. Separately, a July 2026 candidate described completing an assignment that extended an existing Node.js server.

Before changing an unfamiliar application, reproduce the failure and trace the relevant data. Make a focused fix, then add a regression test and check whether another endpoint or view was affected. A larger refactor needs an explanation of the cause and why a smaller change would be insufficient.

Candidates have also described JavaScript problem-solving in a web fundamentals round. Rehearse array transformations and asynchronous control flow without relying on a framework. Explain what happens when an operation rejects or results arrive in a different order from the requests.

Node.js and asynchronous integration

The July assignment involved asynchronous endpoints and aggregation of data from several sources, with request logging and input validation. It also included event-driven notifications and streamed updates.

The exercises below isolate parts of that server assignment for practice. Request logging and validation fit the asynchronous chain in Middlewares: each function shares a context and decides whether to continue. After implementing the chain, add a logging step around await next() and a validation step that stops invalid requests.

Bounded concurrency limits how much work an endpoint sends upstream at once. In Map Async Limit, you must also preserve input order in the returned results, and the operation rejects if a mapping call fails. Test it with requests that finish out of order.

When an endpoint needs every outcome, including failures, the behavior of Promise.allSettled provides another aggregation model. The exercise records each result or rejection; deciding which failures permit a partial response is a separate endpoint-design task. It does not limit concurrency by itself.

Subscriptions can outlive the work that created them. Implement Event Emitter to rehearse registration, listener removal, and event delivery, then connect events to an HTTP response. A disconnected client should not leave listeners behind; check invalid input and rejected promises as well.

System design rounds

In July 2026, a candidate described an architecture discussion covering the journey from eBay's product listing page to its product detail page. Practice the E-commerce Marketplace design, starting with that transition before extending into the cart or checkout.

Trace three concrete situations:

  • Changing a search filter: Decide which state belongs in the URL, how requests are identified, and how an older response is prevented from replacing newer results.
  • Opening a product and navigating back: Explain the data needed by each page, when cached data can be reused, and how to restore the shopper's filters and scroll position.
  • Loading incomplete product details: Decide which information blocks a purchase, which sections can load independently, and how to handle a price or availability change before submission.

For the search box, specify the API contract for suggestions and how the component handles out-of-order responses. Include keyboard selection and explain how submitting a suggestion changes the listing page's URL and results.

eBay's historical engineering articles on progressive rendering offer useful case studies for slow dependencies. Study how a page becomes useful before every service has responded, then explain the same decision in the technology used for your interview. Use the Front End System Design Playbook to organize requirements, client state, APIs, and performance.

Project and behavioral preparation

The official hiring guide asks candidates to discuss their impact and approach to collaboration. Choose a project where you diagnosed a production issue or improved a slow user flow. Explain how you found the cause, what you changed, how you measured the result, and how you coordinated the rollout.

For a full-stack position, trace one operation through your frontend and backend. Make your own contribution clear, including any decision to keep the implementation simpler or defer a risky change.

  1. Confirm the round formats: Read eBay's hiring guide and ask which rounds use vanilla JavaScript, Node.js, or a frontend framework. Check whether you will modify an existing project.
  2. Repair a small application: Introduce a rejected request, a duplicated event listener, and an invalid payload into a practice project. Reproduce and fix each problem with a regression check.
  3. Rehearse browser fundamentals: Use JavaScript and web quiz questions to practice explaining behavior aloud, then build a marketplace component from the UI coding collection.
  4. Design the listing-to-detail journey: Inspect eBay's public shopping pages, sketch the URL and API contracts, and work through a slow-network case. Use the system design collection for further practice and the engineering articles below for examples of progressive delivery.
  5. Prepare a project deep dive: Bring a before-and-after account of a reliability or performance improvement, including the evidence that the change worked.
